Steeple Project Celebration
Showing on Fri 20 Mar
The Tron Theatre is celebrating the completion of the latest phase of their Steeple Project. The Tron’s Steeple on Trongate is Glasgow’s third oldest building dating back to the 16th century and The Tron maintain it as part of their commitment to the heritage of the City.
The Tron commissioned artist Kayleigh McGuiness to install a sculpture under the archway of the steeple, inspired by the history of the building. In tandem, Sergey Jakovsky of Sharmanka Kinetic Theatre has restored the extraordinary moving sculpture of St Mungo on the west side of the steeple.
The completion of this phase will be marked with an introduction from Niall Murphy of Glasgow City Heritage Trust, a talk from architect Scott Abercrombie on the history and legacy of the Steeple, followed by artist Kayleigh McGuinness speaking about her installation and how she responded to the history of the Tron in the work. There will be the opportunity to view her work, on a tour led by Kayleigh, as well as a chance to see the kinetic St Mungo.
Three short films will be shown made by Mollie Ford (researcher and writer), over a period of 12 weeks at the Tron with the final films created by GMac and Jayme Bartlett who documented the process.
Funding from Glasgow City Heritage Trust (GCHT), augmented by Glasgow Institute of Architecture (GIA)
