Playwright May Sumbwanyambe, Tron Theatre’s SSP@50 fellow, will present a reading of his new work, James McCune Smith.

This reading will tell the true story of James McCune Smith, the first known African-American to receive a medical degree. Denied entry to American-based schools because of his race, he was welcomed at the University of Glasgow. He became a doctor, intellectual, abolitionist and a social justice advocate putting the needs of his community before the advancement of his own career.

Created with support from the Scottish Society of Playwrights’ SSP@50 Fellowship.
