Canadian-born 21-year-old Colter Wall sings like the survivor of a long, hardscrabble life, soaked in blues and Appalachian traditions. His world-weary baritone and vividly gritty songcraft - fragmented narratives of loneliness, desperation and betrayal – won major plaudits for his self-titled, Dave Cobb-produced debut album in 2017.
Tyler Childers’s darkly compelling debut LP, Purgatory, boasts none other than Sturgill Simpson’s first outside production credit, its sharply-written songs spanning high-lonesome starkness to muscular country-rock, suffused with Southern gothic shadows.
