With so many American plays, musicals and TV shows being produced in the UK, the ability to act convincingly in a Standard American accent is an essential tool for any actor. Whether you are completely new to the accent or just looking to brush up on your existing experience before an audition, this workshop aims to provide you with an overview of the pronunciation and rhythm of the accent in a fun and relaxed environment. You will have a chance to apply the work practically on sample audition texts (or bring your own text if you prefer) and receive feedback and direction from actor and voice coach Michelle Ashton.
Michelle Ashton is an actor, writer and voice coach based in Manchester and London. She gained an MA in Professional Voice Practice from Royal Birmingham Conservatoire in 2017 and has experience of voice coaching in drama schools, theatre productions and with private clients. In addition to acting and teaching, Michelle also creates work for her theatre company Messy Dress Media. She has written and produced three stage plays: ‘Good Hidings’ (winner of the Forever Manchester Award 2009) ‘FINE’, which was performed in Manchester and London and ‘The Stars are Made of Concrete’ which was nominated for Best New Writing and Best Drama at the 2015 Greater Manchester Fringe festival. ‘Stars’ was subsequently chosen to be performed at the First Break Festival at Oldham Coliseum Theatre Studio during a tour of the North-West.
